OT..What caused the hyperinflation of Mopar values in 87/88?

I bought my first car, a nice 1969 Plymouth GTX 440/727 from a Dallas AutoTrader in 1984 for $1100. Back then $1000-1500 would buy a #2 or #3 condition Charger,RoadRunner, Challenger,etc. In fact the guy had a mint Alpine White 440/727 Superbird that he said he would have to have $8100 to part with.

Fast forward to 1988. Big block Mopar B & E bodies went through the roof. A & C bodies followed as well as small blocks, LRE trucks, FFPW's, you get the idea.

What caused this upward spiral to begin, cheap oil/gas?
