In the '60s I spent a fair amount of time in Baja, surfing and fishing...and other things. It was obvious that the Mexicans were quite adept at keeping their vehicles alive and literally driving them into the ground. Probably any vehicle that was considered absolutely non driveable quickly became a donor vehicle.
I got my '51 Ford woody bogged down in some sand and along came an old Ford full of Mexicans who had made the "impassable" trip from Cabo up the east side of Baja to Mexicali. They are pretty resourceful people, maybe even more so back then.
