Ribs on the back panel of cab

There was obviously some material stuffed between the cab sheet metal and the three ribs. What have you used as a replacement? Based on the staples, the original material had to be already attached to the rib before mounting the rib to the cab. Not sure if there needs to be anything. What was the original purpose? Should it be sandwiched between the rib and the sheet metal. i have some fat mat that can slip back there but will not fill the space completely.
