Hello All,
Well I didn't quite make it to an All-Mopar meet yesterday. My brother and I were motoring down US 101 and about 20 miles into the trip the 237 started backfiring through the carb. I slowed down till it stopped farting and we continued on. About a mile or 2 down the road it did the same again. I decided to try and nurse it back home which I was able to do. Along the way it did it a couple times more. Prior to the1st backfiring incident, the motor temp was 160, oil pressure was at 45 Lbs and we were cruising at 60 MPH indicated at 2450 RPM's. Even after the first incident the gauges all read normal.
On arriving back home, we checked the dwell, vacuum and the timing, along with checking the compression. All were normal, but I have a question on the compression readings. They were all within 5 -10 LBS of each other, but the highest reading I could get was 100 Lbs on one cylinder. The rest read 90-95. My starter seemed to turn the motor over slowly, so maybe that had an effect on the low readings. I have the VPW high lift cam installed in the motor. The Dodge repair manual says I should have anywhere from 110-140 lbs. The motor has not backfired since then and it is as smooth as a Swiss watch. I have run it up hills in 3rd gear turning 2500 RPM's and I have had no miss or backfire and it seems to have plenty of power. Do you think it was a case of water contamination in the gas? This afternoon I will take it on the freeway again at around 60 and see if it starts doing the "Popcorn machine" sound. LOL. In the meantime, what do you guys think might have caused the backfiring. Thanks for any advice. Have a nice day.p
