I've had great success with rubber grease over the years and won't do brakes without it. About 40 something years ago in the tropics on Cape York the Jeep started leaking badly from a couple wheel cylinders. I was lucky to be able to buy a couple seals but the cylinders were really badly pitted (salt water, mud, you name it) anyway I wrapped some emery tape around a stick and spent some time getting the cylinders as good as I could, then assembled with a heap of rubber grease inside the seals and smothered the pistons and put it back together - the brakes were still working fine when the vehicle eventually died several years later - hooked on rubber grease since then.
