Main cause of wheels cracking is loose lug nuts causing the wheel to wallow around. Most of the time, the holes are too buggered up at that point. But if not, I can't see any reason why a good weld shouldn't hold if the lug nuts are kept tight thereafter. Easy check for loose lug nuts is to get in the habit of looking for rust streaks radiating out from the lug nuts. At least in wet weather, that will tell you if your lug nuts are loose.
