Since condensation or other sources of water contamination is inevitable in a braking system, having a brake fluid that is hygroscopic is a useful tool in removing that water. Silicone fluids do not absorb water, therefore any water that makes its way into the system will pool in the low spots and rust. DOT 5 brake fluid is silicone. Using a good quality DOT 3, 4, or 5.1 brake fluid will sponge up any moisture. That, along with regular (yearly) brake system flushes, should keep your brake system long-lived and healthy.
