Two manuals I have both say that the gaps for the compression rings should be between 0.007 - 0.015" for the cast iron rings and 0.007 - 0.017" for the chrome coated rings.

If the end gaps really are only 005", then that is a big risk. The rings will expand during operation, closing the gap and will likely seize in their cylinders, causing a lot of damage.

If you think the gaps are actually that small, I suggest you take the pistons out and double-check. Perhaps you'll need to file the ends to get the into the correct range. Also, if you have any doubts at all about the amount of torque it takes to rotate the crank, I'd suggest taking things apart to have a look. You need to be sure of it.
