disassembling windshield frame

I'm ready to take my windshield frame apart to replace the glass and rubber, before I do I thought I'd ask for any tips, The windshield is a clean CA WC 1/2 ton, screw slots are nice and crisp, Is there any trick to remove the small screws without snapping them, are they brass?
Any tips are appreciated.
