Matt: in our neck of the woods there is a shop called Martin and Otterback in Bladensburg, Maryland. 20 years ago they were a full service machine shop, but now they only do crankshafts. They welded and ground a crankshaft for a C-130 engine for a tractor for me and it was as good as new. They were happy to show me around, which was pretty fun, especially since some of the crankshafts they work on are 8' long or so.

In retrospect, it would have been cheaper for me to find a crankshaft that did not need welding and grinding, but I did get to learn some.

They are also the folks who pushed me to do thing right by asking " do you want it just to run, or do you want it to be as good or better than new?" Last year I saw that a lot when a customer would bring in one scored brake drum or rotor. when I ask them where's the other, they tell me it's fine...
