rear thrust surface on my flathead crankshaft is badly scored. Also, the rear main seal surface has corrosion and will need attention of some kind. Welding, followed by grinding, is probably the only way to get the thrust surface back in shape, and may also be the only option for the seal surface. The rest of the crank is an excellent candidate for re-working, as all the journals are standard size, and nothing else appears to be in bad condition.

My machinist will have to send it to a shop that does this kind of work, as he does not. What questions do you recommend I ask, or requirements do you recommend I stipulate, to help ensure I get a good welding job?

Thanks.
