I got a real shock this evening. Something I never would have expected. I'm doing some wiring for the Mine Tour and I needed a ditch dug. I posted an ad on the local Facebook classifieds saying I needed somebody to hand-dig about 20' of ditch tomorrow morning, $10/hr cash paid when the ditch is done. Within an hour I had probably 15 replies, all sounding ready and willing to work. They said things like "not afraid to get my hands dirty", "will do whatever you need, boss", "can do framing, welding, electric, whatever", and so on. I hated to say no to any of them. I'm still kind of reeling from the experience. As it happened, I'd just read that on the coast (Seattle area), the "poverty level" has just been set at $72,000/year. And here we have 15 guys jumping on half a day of $10/hr ditch-digging work?

It's like the coasts are just splitting off and drifting away from the rest of the country. It frightens me, honestly.
