I would put the long shoe on the front. It has more friction material, so it would tend to wear longer. The larger surface area also lowers the overall PSI on the face of the shoe, which tends to counteract the self-energizing affect of the front shoe.

And if Bob Stahl says to do it, I'd take that to the bank.
