The Lockheed brake system only has one shoe which is drawn into the drum via friction during normal operation. When traveling forward, braking causes the leading shoe to have greater friction. This originally caused the front shoe to wear more quickly. Consequently, the stepped bore wheel cylinder (smaller bore to front) and a smaller shoe were employed (some time around the mid thirties?). These reduced the resulting friction of the front shoe and helped to normalize the wear period between front and rear shoes.
