I cant speak for hardened seats but I believe the reason ethanol gets the reputation for burning hotter is that in a carburated engine it changes the a-f ratio. Spark engines operate on the fuel rich side of stoichiometric much of the time. Stoichiometric is the hottest flame and temperatures drop when you operate richer or leaner. Ethanol has oxygen in it and requires less air for stoichiometric combustion so if you are running fuel rich and add ethanol the mixture is leaner and therefore hotter. If you rejet the carb for more fuel you will lower combustion temps.

I once read an article that the original reason for adding ethanol (oxigenated fuel) was to cause older carburated engines to run leaner and therefore lower hydrocarbon emmissions. Most fuel injected engines can compensate for ethanol blends up to a point. I think now days the bio content is more important and most people dont even know what a carb is.
