I’ve seen hardened intake valves and seats offered for our flatheads. Will our engines benefit from these? The original parts were not hardened, and they have done fine on unleaded fuel, and even E10, for decades. But if the ethanol content in fuel rises, as it might, will the original equipment hold up as well? I believe ethanol burns hotter than gasoline, and perhaps there are other negative effects on the valve train.

My machinist says he will replace all six intake seats for about $100 labor cost, so it seems like a no-brainer, but are there potential downsides to running an engine so equipped? Or is there a risk of damaging the engine during the installation?

What say you guys?

While we’re on the topic, I’ve seen hardened exhaust seats offered, too. The original seats were hardened, but the new ones are supposed to be even harder. Do you think it’s beneficial to use them, especially considering the possible future of our fuel?
