The only thing that matters is side wall clearance when mounted And loaded. Center to center is only a proxy for that, something that can be checked before mounting the tires etc.
His current center to c distance is one tire width plus 3/4". If he measures a tire, he'll know if he also meets YOUR specs.
I suspect he does need that wider spacer he speaks of. How he does it on lug-centric wheels I dunno.
