To much silicone on both sides can be dangerous, especially where the distance between bolts holes is wide, such as a oil pan.

The silicone can allow the gasket to slide out of position when tightening the bolts. I have seen jobs people did where the gasket was almost totally slid out from between the mating surfaces.
