Good quality (e.g. Milwaukee) blades will cut mild steel just fine if you keep it slow. Cutting oil helps tremendously, even if you just give it a squirt from time to time by hand. Any lubricant/coolant, even dirty motor oil or plain water, is a lot better than nothing. Plus, with coolant you can run at a higher speed. The moment you see a spark, you've ruined your blade, so put in a new one and go slower next time. Remember, steel bandsaw blades cut structural steel all day long in industrial shops. The difference is they run at slow speed, with just the right pressure, and coolant flood. Once you get the feel, you can do the same with a sawzall.
