What about just cutting the original wires a couple inches from the end plug. Then solder in the needed length of wire(s). Don't use crimp butt connectors or electrical tape. Use shrink fit tube to cover and insulate your solder joints. I like to shrink tube on each wire then use a larger shrink tube to cover all of the wires rather than wrapping them with electrical tape.
