I am running an old style canned ham pump with a huge cast pulley. The large pulley gave me the RPM at the pump I wanted. I have a single return line. I run a hydroboost with out power steering. I put a Y in the high pressure return line and hooked the hydroboost low pressure output to the Y. The high pressure line has a straight shot through the Y. This allows the high pressure flow to "suck" the low pressure flow. This arrangement has caused no issues at all. I was told it was best to use a Y and not to use a T for best flow.

If I ever put power steering in, I would add a second return line to the reservoir.

The only issue that I had was at first I was getting fluid splash coming out between the cap and the reservoir neck. It was making a real mess. This was easily solved with a new reservoir cap with a splash guard on it. The splash guard is simply a thin rubber cone that is on the dipstick part of the cap that deflects the fluid back down into the reservoir. I was surprised that most caps do not have a splash guard.
