That's what I initially thought when I decided to put the 5.9L in. However, 360 and 5.9 engines are balanced differently. There is no such thing as a 172 tooth flywheel balanced for a 5.9L.
I knocked the ring gear off a modern 143 tooth 5.9L flywheel and will have to have it turned down ever so slightly to fit a replacement 172 tooth ring gear on. It's close but won't quite press on as-is.
