I would start with replacing the coil and condenser. I believe the coil is normally filled with oil and might be responsible for the oily stains. I would also check the points to insure that they are not fused together. When you connect the battery cable, I do not believe it should make a big spark, if it does, you probably still have a short out there.
The problem with a short/smoke wires is that some of the wires may have burnt through the 40 year old insulation and fused with a neighbor wire. I would seriously think of installing a fuse block setup. I know this looks like its developing from a simple problem to a complex project, but there you go. I would get rid of the old cloth wrappings in favor of something from this decade (spiral wrap, etc) Keep a fire extingusher handy. I have a small one mounted on the inside of the passenger door.
