To pack or not to pack?

As a subject for discussion I'd like to ask why is it necessary to pack the hub full of grease when packing the wheel bearings. I can see the necessity for it on the inner "knuckle hubs", but cannot see why you should pack the drum hub full as well. In days of old when the lubricating properties of grease were a far cry from modern day lubricants I suppose it could have been a good idea. If the wheel bearings are packed on a regular basis it just seems a waste as the grease that is packed into the far recesses of the hub just stays there forever. When you've cleaned the hubs out I think you've all seen what I'm talking about. My thoughts are if the wheel bearings get hot enough to melt the grease out of the bearing, I don't think that the grease that is packed into the hum is going to make much difference. How about you all weighing in on this with pros and cons.
