Y'all may remember my troubles with a broken axle shaft in my old WC56 POS.... Well I've learned a lot since then...but apparently not enough

Here we are again with a new civilian truck. I decided to go through the brakes to a minor degree as you know. In doing that, I found a bad lower steering knuckle bearing. Of course, one thing leads to another, so I figured I should swap the hubs (to get the lug nuts on the proper sides), and refresh the grease in the CV joints while I was in there and just generally inspect things. Easy stuff so far.

Got all the parts gathered up, took the drivers side hub off the truck....and what the hell do I find????

A stinking CV joint and (thinner) axle just like the one I broke in the WC. The WC had the 5 ball bearing type CV joint, and thats what came out of my civilian truck. The passenger side is proper. So I'm left with the question now of how do I change it back to proper? At least this time I've got all the parts. Will the correct axle just slip in there and work? Or are the axle carriers different sizes? Looks kind of like the old style CV joint is a little bit longer end to end....but is it possible that someone just stuck it in there at some point and called it good?

I'd really like to sort this one out correctly...don't like the thinner axle shaft. Don't want to break another one.....

Also, The fellow who now has the old WC would probably love to have a good axle for it....

Thanks for any help that can be provided....
