One thing I learned way back in the late 70's when I was four-wheeling every weekend was to never wind the cable back on the drum immediately after having used the winch to make a pull. For one, winding it back on without a load would make the resulting layers looser than the unused underlying layers. But more importantly leaving the cable unwound made it quicker to access for the next pull by not having to first unwind it by hand or under power. So what to do with half the cable that you don't want to wind back on the drum? The answer was wrap it in a figure eight pattern (to avoid kinks) around the ends of the bumper to temporarily store it. Pipe or tube bumpers were perfect for this. Power-Wagon winch bumpers were almost as good. I used another method. I had very large tow hooks off of some large WWII truck mounted on the front face of my "flat" bumper specifically to wrap and store the cable around.

I see this guy has no provisions (on the front bumper anyway) to temporarily store his cable. However, I doubt that is the reason he is storing his in the "cab". ;^)
