Yes it stinks, even when new. I make sure I have rubber gloves on when ever I am near that stuff.

I have my garage under part of my house. My wife could tell when I opened anything in the garage. I learned something from Mike Homes on TV. The part of my house over the garage was always cold so I pulled the ceiling to add insulation and said OMG. The insulation was black from air infiltration. The cold air return for that end of the house runs down one of the joist runs. I looked at how they insulated with 3 1/2" of insulation and ran the heating ducts and how they installed the sheet rock. Every joist run was open and crossconnected to each other and to the uninslated walls. The cold air return sucked everything from the garage. I boxed the air return with plywood and insulated with foam sheeting. That killed the draft from the air return grill. Then I put in 10" of insulation and sheet rocked it. I then caulked the sheet rock where it butted up against the support beams.

Now there is absolutely no air infiltration from the garage to the house. I can paint or do what ever I want and my wife can't smell anything. Mike Homes is kind of anal about keeping all fumes and exhaust from the garage getting into the house. I agree with him 100%. It really doesn't take much for me it was boxing the air ruturn and making sure all edges of the sheet rock were sealed.
