If you use a regular ignition switch with the spring loaded start position you could run the ballast resistor thru the "on" position and bypass the ballast resistor with the "start" position going to the coil with the full 6/12 volts for a hotter spark. Just hold it on the spring loaded position while still using the foot pedal to start the engine with and not hurt the coil and do the same thing as a newer starter using a relay/solenoid to run it with.
