It may be somehting in the tranny but takes an attached pto to transmit the noise. Maybe a chipped tooth in the tranny, or end play in the cluster gear. Bad tooth might be on input shaft,front of cluster, cluster pto gear, or even first or second gear on output.

Plus, isn't there a thrust problem with M-37 trannies?

AND, chalk a mark on the pto shaft/drive line, run truck, see if the mark clocks the same place every turn. It will if prob is PTO, mark will clock differently if the prob is inside the traany, because the ratio of tranny to pto is NOT 1:2, more like some fraction near 1 3/4 :1?
