My understanding of vibration dampers (harmonic balancers) is that they dampen out the torsional vibrations in the crankshaft, which in some engines can be severe enough cause the crankshaft to break, or at least cause premature wear of bearings and other engine parts. So it seems odd that some 251's or 265's would need them and others wouldn't. For these engines, maybe there's another purpose aside from preventing the problems I mentioned above?

If someone has a 251 or 265 crank pulley with damper/harmonic balancer, can you tell me what its outside diameter is?
