I never worked on a 251 but looking at the picture Chris Chase posted on 1/19 19:55:55 you can see the large radius between rod journals #3 & 4. This radius is probably large enough to clear the shaft of the distributor...but not the driven gear. So if you were to try to remove the distributor while #1 was near BDC the radius area of the crank could trap it.
