When I was a paperboy back in the 50's, one of my customers was a retired Railroad Machinist. He had run the main railroad machine shop for either the Atlantic Seaboard or the Coastline (the tracks crossed at 90 degrees in the middle of our town).
When he retired, they told him they were going to replace all the antique tools with modern equipment--he could have the stuff if he wanted it. So he built a long shop in his backyard with all the machines running off a central motor driven shaft running down the middle and a whole series of belts and chains. I got one "tour" and never followed it up.
Now I know why Mark Twain said a "great tragedy is that youth is wasted on the young!"
