I have an industrial tractor with a hydraulic pump that that is connected to the front of the front of the engine and is protected by a cover fabricated from 3/8' steel plate. I recently changed the hydraulic fluid and filter. The loader manual said NOT to run the pump dry under any circumstances as it will cause SEVERE damage to the pump. I guess it is due to the type pump and how it operates inside. I would make sure your pump can be rub dry before you find out the hard way.
