noisy starter after engine change

My 65 WM had a very worn engine so I bought a newly rebuilt 265 to put in. After the swap, the starter (not changed and quiet on the original engine) was VERY noisy although it still started the engine. It sounds like some clearance is too close, or its binding somewhere etc

I believe the ring gears are all the same on the 251 series of engines....is that correct. In any case, these ring gears looked to be identical although I did not count the teeth.

There does not look like there is any way to adjust the clearances....what else could cause this problem?
