Lots of speedo gears are built with enough slop that you can go up or down several teeth on the same drive gear.
Maybe check a parts book, see if several driven gears use the same drive gear?
Though it will change shift points in an auto, all it does in a OD unit is ummm ALLOW you to shift it? One tooth = umm 7%?
And a ffty year old truck, who knows if it is correct for that rear end gear ratio any more?
