"Minimum stock inventory" and "just in time" production means parts arrive and are used immediately, you don't stockpile parts like the old days - that costs money and storage space costs money, so they trim as much as possible. My "Process Improvement" job was to cut as many non-value adding steps out of production processes as possible to achieve this. According to the theory, any piece of production the "rests" on the line is an extra cost item because it's not having anything done to it. Back in the '60's Chrysler was bragging about having the longest production line in Australia, all the extra cars sitting there cost them their factory, Mitsubishi took over the plant and set about reducing it to be the shortest.
