I was tongue in cheek with that comment. Obviously CA has way more assaults than ID, and we have no gun restrictions other than the federal ones. Recently they removed the requirement for a CCW permit, even within city limits (which was the only place it was required before) and they allowed CCW holders to carry on college campuses. Predicted carnage has not ensued.
I expect in CA, when it comes time to register, most rural gun owners will forget that they left their rifles and pistols in various places in the barn or garage.
As for Switzerland, though, my understanding is they have pretty strict gun control (mandatory registration, storage requirements, etc) so it's not exactly a gun owner's Utopia. Also, I think Switzerland's best defense is that they still have enough of everyone's money in their vaults that any serious enemy would have to make an expensive calculation about attacking that country.
