Only the high point on the contact point's cam affects timing. If you want better mileage, go with the distributor that uses a vacuum advance. I would go with an IGS that has both vacuum and mechanical advance. If the vacuum fails, mechanical takes over. Rotate the engine to 6-8 degrees BTC and use what is referred to as an "idiot light" with two wires an two alligator clips, one to connect to the points tension arm, the other to ground. You can also use a portable radio and tune to a "noise" channel. Rotate the distributor until the idiot light lights or you hear an audible pop if using a radio, then lock the distributor. Make sure points have the proper gap.
