Maybe so, but at that small size and rusty, I'm not sure how clear the difference in thread profile would be. Maybe they do indeed have a squared-off profile for strength. If so, that also points to a special/custom part that's not made any more. If I had the clips, I would try some modern sheet-metal screws to see how they fit. At 10 TPI, with the very approximate fit of a clip nut, the important thing is that the tangs on the "nut" fit all the way into the grooves between the threads of the screw. Modern sheet metal screws have a flat bottom and a sharp top. In this case, it's only the bottom of the profile that matters. Another option would be to simply buy some clip nuts that have a machine screw nut spot-welded to them, and use available machine screws.
