i do not believe that you will overwhelm your stock tranny with whatever modded flathead you choose to install - guy run v8s in front of them. i believe in the adage that there is no substitute for cubic inches but flatheads are a bit different in that respect. the smaller flathead has offset rods. the larger block has straight connecting rods and can be built for more power and RPMS. i'd build a 237 which is the larger block with the smallest stroke. have it balanced, install a planed stock head, dual exhausts and a 2bbl - not 2 single barrel carbs. get the camshaft ground and install with heavier springs... install an electronic distributor and a gm alternator. it would be my choice for a stock appearing repower. in my non stock m37, i installed a 360. it fit nice, ran nice, sounded great. it was more engine that was needed even with 489s and big tires. to fully utilize it, you'd need more transmission gearing and a full roll cage and a really good life insurance policy!
