In my journey to find the solution I noticed the NEG cable was one of the bolt onto the bare wire type. It WAS corroded too. I cut of a chunk and cleaned and installed. In the end I bought a brand new one, just in case, to match the new Red POS cable I installed a year ago. I figured new cables all around, new battery, new cleaned connection areas using star washers, I couldn't go wrong.
