The way I do it is by pulling all the spark plugs first. That makes the engine real easy to turn over by hand. Then I use #1 Cylinder and put my finger in the spark plug hole. I grab the fan blade and pull on it to turn the engine over. If the belt slips I use my thumb on the same hand to push on the belt a little. You will feel the pressure building up and when it does just watch the pointer now till it lines up. If it does not build up any pressure you have another problem but I think you had this engine running before?
