You need the heat in the manifold right away on a cold start. Exhaust gas is the way to go. Buy the time the water is hot so is the manifold and engine. The heat riser is in 1 manifold and the valve closes off an forces the exhaust gas up into the head and threw the manifold and out the other side. As the spring heats up the valve opens. This prevent the carb from icing up in certain weather conditions. Living on the east coast and working on cars. I have lots of under hood time working on this problem. And have lots of stories to about heat risers.
