I agree with that! We have a lot of Shagbark Hickory around us but not much on our property. Had a windstorm come through(Hurricane Ike's remnants) and it blew down a 3 ft diameter Shagbark. I thought, all right, finally get to work some of this great wood up. Every split was a full cycle pass as it strung so much.

But.... If you ever get the chance to do a Bitternut Hickory(Smooth bark) do it! You can spit a 3 ft round with a maul in 1 to 2 wacks. Easier than walnut with 2 the BTU's. That is what is being worked up in the pic here. Makes ricking an end stack crazy easy.

Another bad one is cottonwood. Stinks while doing it, stringy all the way and heavy, till it dries out to balsum weight with not much heat value.
