Unfortunately most of the "American" tools are actually made in China, but packaged and sold here. A common fail with Chinese goods is their own "value engineering" once they get the American Companies approval on the manufacturing bid. Cheap rubber seals are one of the items, thinner gauge sheet metal than spec' d is another. Their steel is known to have "hard spots" that will destroy a lathe or mill bit in a heartbeat, scaring the bee jeebers out of the operator due to a ball bearing in the mix.
In all, whatever the weight rating they give, I always purchase at least double of what I need, and still have and use my Sears floor jack I got for a birthday present 45 years ago.
