Oil cloth was the predecessor to linoleum.

Maybe you remember the rain coats of your youth, heavy fabric with a "plastic" coating? Nowadays they are all vinyl. But the cars and woodies had a leatherette texture to the roofs too. Not sure about the war time production.

In about '75 we rcovered a panel truck with canvas, and pounded in a rope. Caulked the rope.body/canvas seam . But it would leak in the rain, and drip cold water right down the driver's neck. Seams there was a weep hole in the corner of the groove to prevent rust out.

Next carryall I owned, I used plywood and fiberglass.

I do like what the resto-mod guys do, weld on a roof cut from a Suburban or van. Those bodys could sure use some added rigidity.
