The best advance curve will get you the best performance. A dist with vacc will help too.

It may be too subtle to people driving a tank, but there is a reason the factory put vacs on cars.

High performance and boats did niot fhave the vac unit, because they always run at full throttle. And they left them off trucks too. But in light useage, where you cruise at part throttle, auto advance matched to load helps.

Joe's use of an industrial engine in a light truck screams for a distributor re-curve. With my several years of perfomance shop experience,(Dyno Shop, Santee) I did my own by the seat of my pants, and ended up at the stock curve being best, + vac advance, and initial timing of +10 degrees. I'm running a slant six factory electronic dist.
