Motor pre lube before initial start up

Hello All,
What do you use to pre lube the Lube system before you start up a rebuilt motor. I thought about using a stay lube hand pump and pumping oil into the oil galleries that way. The motor has been in my garage covered in plastic from it's April rebuild till I installed in my 1/2 ton a month ago. It had no oil in it while sitting. I have filled it up to capacity and both hand cranked and attempted to get pressure on the gauge by spinning the starter with the ignition off. No reading on the gauge yet. Should I remove the oil pump and prime it ? One guy to me to start it up and if no pressure reading on the gauge in 30 seconds to shut it down. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
