Steering gear worm shaft bent

After 3 years, I decided to clean up the steering gear. Joe Giraud even had the sector shaft seal that he couldn't use. I discovered that the shaft is about 1/4 in off perfectly straight and it seems to be bent about 6 inches above the exit from the housing. Anyone had this problem and is there anyway to fix it. Of course I can spend $700 with VPW if they have the parts but I want to start with the lower cost solution. Any of you out there have a unit or shaft you can part with? Thanks in advance.
