1958 W-100, Dana 44 Question

Got my drums off, (doing the brakes and wheel bearings)should there be much axle end play with the lockouts removed? Does the end play even matter? Is there any type of end thrust on these axles? Does the snap ring keep the end play to a minimum when it's installed? Thanks in advance..........
